Grand Safari: the way it should be

News

Xavier and myself are currently in the middle of Uganda looking for the big sitatunga of East Africa. My friend has been hunting with us for a few years now in different countries. And we have decided to meet in Entebbe this past 7th May for an expedition trip in the heart of the big sitatunga kingdom of Uganda. We are very fortunate to have most probably the best concessions in the world to hunt this legendary waterbuck.

Day 4: Peter (my old hunting friend from Tanzania would not have missed this expedition trip for the whole world!), Xavier and myself are meeting for coffee at 5:00 am in this beautiful camp mess situated on the Kafue river. 15 minutes drive in the land-cruiser, another 15 minutes in the pirogue and there we are on the other side of the river where we have decided to unexpectedly approach a big male sitatunga in one of our numerous stalkings on the concession. It’s still dark when we get through the papyrus and a sitatunga makes a few jumps in the water to our left… maybe it’s the big male Peter saw earlier on… When we just got in the stalking, something moves in the papyrus, just less than 35m away, but the darkness makes it difficult to identify the animal… White points, most probably the big male… wrong, the white points are just… a pair of hippo’s ears who was passing by!

The sun rises. Very quickly we can spot a very nice trophy less than 200m from us, about 25”, but we expect to find a 26 or 27”. This destination is just extraordinary! Those of you who have already hunted a sitatunga will know how fortunate we are to let go very nice trophies to try and get an exceptional one! And this is Uganda! We are re-writing the record book. In 4 days, we saw sitatunga every single day, up to 17 a day (both males and females) of which 5 males would have made more than one hunter happy… but… in an exceptional country, exceptional trophies and we definitely are looking for a great trophy record for Xavier.

This afternoon, we discover another area of this gigantic territory (we have 150km along the river and we have only been over 3km on both sides of the camp…), are we going to find the trophy of our dreams? Well let’s meet again in a few days to follow up on our adventures directly from the Kafue river in Uganda…
