Tanzania
The Selous is named after the legendary hunter Frederick Courtney Selous and is the largest hunting area in Tanzania. Together with the Serengeti it forms the biggest conservation area in the country, and it offers the real Africa to the dedicated big-game hunter. It is completely unpopulated: nowhere else on earth can you find more big game.
Tanzania is possibly the ultimate hunting experience in Africa today. From Cape buffalo to old tuskers, we have them all.
The safaris

01
10-day licence10 daysBuffalo in the Selous
The Selous probably holds the biggest buffalo population in Africa, and since 1992 our main PH, Peter Dafner, has an astonishing 100% success rate on Cape buffalo. All other species on a 10-day licence can be hunted too.

02
21-day licence12 days of camp & outfittingLeopard safari
Under Tanzanian regulation cats can only be hunted on a 21-day licence, so all arrangements for 21 days are included. Experience shows 12 days are enough for a big leopard — and you pay for just 12 days of camp and outfitting. Leopards are plentiful and easy to bait.

03
21-day licence16 days of camp & outfittingLion safari
On the same basis as the leopard safari you pay for 16 days of camp and outfitting. All other species on a 21-day licence can be hunted except second and third buffalo, elephant and leopard.

04
For the great tusker14 daysElephant safari
Trophy limits apply: ivory must weigh at least 35 lb or measure 65 inches per tusk. The Selous has a large elephant population but old bulls are always a challenge to find, and great distances are often covered. The flat landscape makes tracking less strenuous — but expect long walks.

05
21 & 28 daysThe full East African experienceClassic safaris
Twenty-one days for elephant or lion, plus leopard, buffalo and plains game. Twenty-eight days for the classic East African “big four” — elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard — just the way Ruark liked to do it, for the experienced hunter who wants to maximise his chance at big trophies. Hunting on foot takes time.
The landscapes
Maasailand
Near Kilimanjaro International Airport
Extends to the Kenyan border in the north, famous for its landscape and its variety of game. Wide-open grass prairies change into dry acacia country, with big herds of Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, gerenuk, wildebeest, lesser kudu, fringe-eared oryx, buffalo and leopard.
The Selous
Near Dar es Salaam International Airport
Low altitude (1,000–2,000 ft) and proximity to the Indian Ocean make it warmer and more humid than Maasailand. Daytime highs run 77–86°F in July and August, and 86–95°F late in the season.
